Real Partial Fossilized Mesohippus Skull and Jaw
Mesohippus was about the size of a large dog, standing roughly 2 feet (60 cm) tall at the shoulder. Unlike its earlier relatives, it had three toes on each foot, though the middle toe was larger and carried most of its weight.
It had a longer face, larger brain, and stronger teeth than earlier horses. These features suggest it was better adapted to grazing and surviving in more open environments. Fossils of Mesohippus have been found in North America. The mesohippus fed mostly on softer twigs and fruit.
