The Kodiak bear, Ursus arctos middendorffi, also known as the Alaskan brown bear, inhabits the islands of the Kodiak Archipelago in southwest Alaska. It is the largest recognized subspecies of brown bear and one of the two largest bears alive today, the other being the polar bear. Its exceptional size is linked to abundant food resources and long-term isolation, with adult males often exceeding 450 kg. Kodiak bears follow a coastal brown-bear diet dominated by salmon and vegetation and display mostly solitary behavior aside from seasonal feeding concentrations.
